Journey Times
Feature Overview
Get median Journey Times between two sensors to better understand delay and congestion in a network
VivaCity’s Journey Time feature provides average journey times between two sensors. VivaCity sensors detect vehicle number plates and calculate journey times of matched vehicles between two sensors. In order to detect number plates, the sensors have specific lens requirements. They are referred to as ANPR sensors (Automatic Number Plate Recognition).
In comparison, VivaCity’s Classified Journey Times feature calculates journey times between two countlines which can be filtered by direction and broken down by road user class (see Classified Journey Times).
VivaCity’s Journey Times feature is designed with a privacy first approach. All data is stored anonymously in VivaCity’s systems. Once the sensor has detected a number plate, the number is encrypted using a hashing algorithm and the hashed number plate is stored securely in VivaCity’s databases. Unhashed number plates and the original video clips are never sent or stored.
Dashboard
Journey Times is available on the following pages
Network Overview
Analysis: Journey Times (single day)
You can navigate to the analysis pages via ‘Network Overview’ (see below) or through ‘Analysis’.
Network Overview
View a preview of Journey Times and journey counts for a single day
Navigate to ‘Network Overview’ and select ‘Journey Times’ from the Features dropdown. Select sensors for Origin Sensor and Destination sensor. The Preview will display average (median) Journey Times and journey counts in hourly time buckets. Swop Origin and Destination sensors to revert the journey flow.
Click ‘View details’ to navigate to the main feature page.
Analysis: Journey Times
Explore Journey Times and journey counts for a single day
On the analysis page, you can
Change date
Change sensors
The page displays two graphs for both journey directions. It shows average Journey Times and Journey Counts in 15min time buckets.
Downloads
You can request single day downloads in a CSV format for your desired sensor pairing in 5 minute, 15 minute and hourly time buckets. Navigate to ‘Download' and select ‘Journey Times’ from the Features dropdown.
Make your selection:

Click ‘Download’.
As data is pre-aggregated, larger time buckets (1 hour) will provide more robust measures of average journey times as they are based on higher journey counts.
API
See API documentation.
Technical details
Before data is served on the dashboard or API the Journey Times data undergoes some data processing to ensure that data anomalies are excluded.
The following journeys are excluded:
Journeys that take more than 1 hour (<3600 seconds) - these matches are not stored in the journey times database.
Journeys that take longer than 7 times the upper 25th percentile value (the parameter can be changed but is set to 7 as the default)
Seeing gaps?
We calculate median journey times from all completed journeys between two specified sensors.
There are a number of possible reasons for data gaps:
Occlusion either from queuing cars or surroundings (i.e. foliage, signs, etc.)
No journeys made between the sensors during the selected time period
Number plates could not be matched (i.e. low detection accuracy due to weather or similar)
