Dwell Times

Dwell Times

Feature Overview

VivaCity’s sensors use their detection and tracking capabilities to calculate average stop times for road users within a zone. Within a sensors' field of view, VivaCity sensors can track an area using zones. Whilst in a zone, sensors record both how long a road user was in that zone and how long they were stationary within it. The stationary time is called Dwell Time.

Dwell Times provides an in-depth understanding of road user stop times as they move through the monitored road space. Dwell Times is reported as aggregated metrics (mean, median, percentiles) and can be analysed for different road users classes.

More complex setups are available to measure Dwell Times for road users that cross particular countlines, e.g. to understand waiting times at signalised crossings of only those pedestrians that crossed the road.

Dashboard

Dwell Times is available on the following pages

  • Network Overview

  • Analysis: Dwell Times (single day)

You can navigate to the analysis pages via ‘Network Overview’ (see below) or through ‘Analysis’.

Network Overview

View Dwell Times zone preview

Navigate to ‘Network Overview’ and select ‘Dwell Times’ from the Feature dropdown. Once you selected a zone, you will see a preview of the sensor image including available zones.

Click ‘View details’ to navigate to the Dwell Times analysis page.

If no sensor image is shown, you can capture a new one by clicking ‘Capture image’

Analysis: Dwell Times

Explore Dwell Times by class and time bucket for a single day

On the analysis page, you can change the following inputs:

  • Date

  • Time of day (via slider)

  • Time bucket

  • Classes (and expand classes)

  • Aggregation method (mean, median, percentiles)

  • Toggle sensor image

If no sensor image is shown, you can capture a new one by clicking ‘Capture image’

Technical details

If, whilst in the sensors field of view, a vehicle or pedestrian travels through and then back through the same zone the total time and total dwell time are the the cumulative values of both traversals through the zone (i.e. the total time is the total of the first traversal plus the seconds traversal)
